What Is Copyright?

Copyright is a legal right that protects original creative works. Every photo, video, and post on Instagram is automatically protected by copyright the moment it is created. The creator (original author) has the exclusive right to:

• Reproduce the work
• Distribute copies
• Create derivative works
• Display the work publicly

When Can You Download Instagram Content?

You may download Instagram content legally in these cases:

• Your own content: Videos, photos, and reels you posted on your own account
• Public domain content: Content that has expired copyright or is explicitly shared as public domain
• Licensed content: Content shared under Creative Commons or other permissive licenses
• Explicit permission: You have written permission from the copyright holder

Fair Use & Limitations

Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission. Fair use is evaluated based on four factors:

• The purpose and character of the use
• The nature of the copyrighted work
• The amount and substantiality of the work used
• The effect on the market value of the original

Note: Fair use does not automatically cover downloading and reposting entire works from Instagram.

What You Should NOT Do
